Charlie Ford is an award-winning director and photographer whose narrative work captures and elevates the human experience. His films, commercials and music videos give voice to the underrepresented, using nuanced character driven storytelling and a dreamlike aesthetic that illuminates the magic of contemporary culture.
Charlie co-created and co-directed the semi-autobiographical long form project Cloudy River, a story about a young pansexual couple navigating an open relationship. With funding from Queer Screen and Screen Australia the series is distributed globally by Escapade Media and is available on SBS On Demand.
This lead to work directing on the 2023 reboot of Australia’s iconic series Neighbours with Amazon Prime and Fremantle Media.
He received consecutive ARIA Award nominations for Best Music Video, directing clips for the likes of Courtney Barnett and Vance Joy (among others) and garnered more than 30 million views, sparking commercial work with major Australian and international brands including Virgin Australia, Vogue, Google, Samsung, Instagram, Telstra, NRL, NRMA and Australian National University.
Charlie’s short film Stone, starring First Nations legend Jack Charles, was the first film by a Swinburne University student to screen at MIFF and screened at the Cannes Short Film Corner. His second short film Kings won Best Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography at the Peninsula Film Festival and screened at various international film festivals.
Working closely with Indigenous organisation YARN Australia for the past 5 years, Charlie’s latest work The Killings focuses on the impacts of Australia’s dark past. It was screened at the Sydney Opera House and premiered online with NOWNESS.
Charlie’s fine-art medium-format film photography explores humanity’s connection to the natural world and has been exhibited in both Melbourne and Sydney.
